Dal Tadka (Yellow Lentil)
Ingredients
- 200g Yellow lentils (toor dal)
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 onion diced
- 1 large Tomato diced
- Chopped coriander
- 1 tsp Red chilli powder
- 1 tsp Coriander powder
- ½ tsp Turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 garlic cloves chopped
- 1 inch piece ginger chopped
- 30g Oil
- Lemon juice to taste
Method
Soak the lentils in water for about 2 hours. Strain. Boil the lentils until tender and set aside. Heat a pan with oil, add cumin seeds and allow to pop. Add chopped onions and fry until soft then add the ginger and garlic and cook for another minute. Add chopped tomatoes and stir. Add the red chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and salt. Cook until the oil separates. Add the boiled lentils and allow to simmer for 5 to 6 minutes. Add chopped coriander and lemon juice, season to taste and serve hot with rice and pappadams.
